Real Madrid eye Calafiori and Gvardiol in defensive overhaul

Florentino Perez has announced that Real Madrid’s summer recruitment is far from over, pledging the arrival of at least one more elite defender following the acquisitions of Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries. Among the primary candidates currently being monitored is Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori.

Per Fabrizio Romano, the Real Madrid president informed AS: “I will bring more players. Everyone who knows me knows that great players want to play for Real Madrid and I want to bring them in. I will make it happen. Another top defender will join this summer.”

With the signings of Konaté and Dumfries finalized, Madrid have turned their attention toward a third defensive addition. Romano indicates that Calafiori and Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol are among the most highly regarded profiles at the club, though both pursuits are categorized as complex operations.

The potential exit of Calafiori would be a significant setback for Mikel Arteta. Since arriving from Bologna in 2024, the Italy international has solidified his reputation as one of the Premier League’s standout left-sided defenders.

Securing a move to the Bernabéu would serve as a major declaration of intent from Perez. The president seems committed to a total reconstruction of the club’s defensive unit following the departures of David Alaba, Dani Carvajal, and Antonio Rudiger.

However, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal would be willing to negotiate for a player viewed as fundamental to their pursuit of silverware.

Calafiori made 26 appearances, scored one goal, and assisted twice in the 2025/25 Premier League.
